If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, you may be one of the lucky ones! An estimated 20.8 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes. That's 7 per cent of our population. But even more alarming is the fact that an estimated 7 million people are unaware that they have the disease. If left untreated, diabetes can cause heart and kidney disease, blindness and circulation problems. There is currently no cure for diabetes, but the good news is that you can enjoy a full and healthy life by educating yourself about diabetes and making good choices. One of the best ways to educate yourself about diabetes is to attend our self-management classes.
Whether you have prediabetes, have recently been diagnosed with diabetes or have had to live with diabetes for a while, these classes are for you. The sessions are conducted by a Registered Nurse, a Registered Dietician, a Podiatrist and a Pharmacist. Topics include signs and symptoms, blood glucose monitoring, key test results, complication prevention, proper foot care, medications, a personalized meal plan, carbohydrate counting, label reading, eating out, sick day management and communicating with your health care providers.
